Stand Up To Cancer - Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

About SU2C

What is the goal of Stand Up To Cancer?

Stand Up To Cancer raises funds for research done by outstanding scientists working in teams and overseen by key leaders in the field. The goal is to get new treatments to patients quickly; we are saving lives now. SU2C draws on the resources of the entertainment community to encourage everyone, from the general public to major corporations, to support this effective work. SU2C-funded scientists have contributed to the development of nine new cancer treatments approved by the FDA, with many more in clinical trials.

We believe that humanity stands at a tipping point in the struggle against cancer. Scientists have learned so much about the basic nature of the disease, right down to the molecular level, and many are now making breakthroughs and achieving real advances in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Life-saving discoveries are within our grasp, unfolding at research centers across the country and around the world. What scientists need is the support and funding necessary to translate those discoveries into more effective treatments.

What is a Dream Team?

Stand Up To Cancer’s signature “Dream Teams” pursue translational cancer research projects that address critical challenges in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to deliver near-term patient benefit through investigation by a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional, collaborative team of expert investigators and patient advocates. These teams, selected and guided by leaders in the field, take innovative ideas from concept to laboratory to patient, testing ideas that have the potential to revolutionize cancer care and open whole new fields of investigation.

Projects may focus on particular organ sites, molecular pathways of cancer, patient populations, or innovative approaches to research. They are designed to accelerate the application of new preventive, diagnostic, or therapeutic approaches in the clinic that lead to patient involvement within the first two to three years of the grant funding period.

Dream Team members span many disciplines and utilize the new tools of modern biology to attack research questions in a coordinated way with a focus on measurable milestones of progress. SU2C employs a variety of mechanisms to foster collaborations within and among the Dream Teams and to promote the sharing of information. The large, competitive Dream Team grants typically provide between $6 million and $22 million per team over three or four years and are accompanied by rigorous scientific oversight to provide additional insight and to ensure compliance with grant proposals and established benchmarks.

In 2009, SU2C launched five Dream Teams as its first projects. Since then, a total of 27 Dream Teams have been selected. Many of these are co-branded with one or more nonprofit collaborators, and two of the teams are branded more specifically as Cancer Interception Teams because of their focus on using emerging discoveries for the earliest possible treatment of cancer.

For information about SU2C’s research, including Dream Teams, visit StandUpToCancer.org/research.

What is a SU2C Research Team?

Stand Up To Cancer Research Grants fund cancer research projects that address critical problems in patient care and deliver near-term patient benefit through investigation by small, collaborative teams of expert investigators. These teams conduct proof-of-principle projects and spearhead work in new fields.

These translational research projects are tightly focused on a particular question or questions involving organ sites, molecular pathways of cancer, patient populations, or innovative methods of treatment. Projects must be designed to accelerate the application of new preventive, diagnostic, or therapeutic approaches in the clinic that lead to patient involvement within the first two to three years of the grant funding period.

Research Team members span multiple disciplines and utilize the new tools of modern biology to attack research questions in a coordinated way. The competitively awarded grants provide up to $5 million over three or four years and are accompanied by rigorous scientific oversight to ensure compliance with grant proposals and established benchmarks.

Since 2013, 17 SU2C Research Teams have been funded with the generous support of collaborators, with 6 teams focused on a variety of cancer topics and 11 operating as Convergence Research Teams.

For information about SU2C’s research, visit StandUpToCancer.org/research.

What is a SU2C Convergence Team?

SU2C Convergence Teams bring together disparate disciplines to work together on very high-risk, blue-sky projects that have the potential to transform approaches to solving cancer.

Convergence projects are awarded in cohorts, each with a common theme, providing additional opportunity for collaboration. The first cohort is made up of four teams of biologists, oncologists, physicists, and engineers, each taking a different approach to modeling how cancer interacts with the body and evolves as it is treated, in order to dramatically change how we approach cancer treatment. The second cohort is made up of seven teams of biologists, oncologists, and computer scientists using artificial intelligence approaches to try to understand how the immune system interacts with cancer.

The competitively awarded grants provide up to $6 million over three years and are accompanied by rigorous scientific oversight to ensure compliance with grant proposals and established benchmarks.

In addition to the funded research projects, support is offered to train a new generation of Convergence Scholars through a program that offers mentorship and career development opportunities for junior scientists on Convergence Teams.  For information about SU2C’s research teams, including Convergence Research Teams, visit StandUpToCancer.org/research.

What is SU2C Catalyst™?

SU2C Catalyst uses funding and materials from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostic, and medical device industries to rapidly explore new uses of potential compounds for cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. Catalyst was launched in 2016 with support from Merck, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Genentech. This funding brings together academic innovation and translational science, exciting compounds from industry, and active SU2C management to speed multi-company and multi-institution projects. The grants provide funding of between $1 million and $3 million over three years. The funds are for collaborative “signal finding” clinical trials with strong translational research potential. Requests for Proposals are open to U.S. and Canadian academic investigators. Multi-investigator, multi-institutional projects are required. For information about SU2C Catalyst projects, visit StandUpToCancer.org/Catalyst.

What is an Innovative Research Grant?

Innovative Research Grants (IRGs) support cutting- edge cancer research that would be deemed too high-risk to receive funding through traditional channels. These $750,000 awards provide significant funding to early-career scientists with novel ideas that have a strong potential to impact patient care. To date, 46 awards have been made in four classes (2009, 2011, 2016, 2017). A complete list of Innovative Research Grant recipients is included in the regularly updated document “SU2C Grants and Awards History.” To learn more about SU2C research, visit StandUpToCancer.org/research/research-portfolio.

Who created Stand Up To Cancer?

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) was created by a group of nine women in the entertainment and news community whose lives have all been affected by cancer in profound ways. In the fall of 2007, they began working together to utilize these communities’ resources to engage the public in supporting a new, collaborative model of cancer research, to increase awareness about cancer prevention, and to highlight progress being made in the fight against the disease. SU2C was formally launched on May 27, 2008. Please visit  StandUpToCancer.org/who-we-are/leadership to learn more about the SU2C Council of Founders and Advisors.
